  • Biao CHEN

born in Fuzhou, Fujian Province. In 1941-1942 he studied in the Department of Civil Engineering, National Southwestern Associated University, and graduated from the Department of Physics, University of Nanking (Chengdu). After 1947 he was engaged in theoretical astrophysics, solar physics and astrophysical dynamics etc., in Purple Mountain Observatory, CAS. He also took part in the construction of the Beijing Astronomical Observatory (BAO) and the Solar Observatory of Yunnan Astronomical Observatory. He was elected as a fellow of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Academician) in 1980. He has successively become a senior research staff in Purple Mountain Observatory, Head of the Theoretical Astrophysics Department, director of Yunnan Astronomical Observatory, honorary director since 1982 and also a member of the XIIth IAU General Assembly (12th) (Solar activity).
  • Darun XIONG

born in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, is an academician of Chinese Academy of Science. Academician Xiong is the director of Academic Committee and the head of Division of Astrophysics of Purple Mountain Observatory. He is also the chief professor of research group of stellar structure, evolution and pulsations. His research area is stellar convection theory and related aspects of stellar structure, evolution and oscillations. Academician Xiong's main academic contribution is the establishment of a new statistical theory of non-local convection to replace the traditional mixing-length theory. His theory is based on hydrodynamic equations and turbulence theory, therefore it can depict stellar convection more precisely.
