Education & Training

Purple Mountain Observatory(PMO)of the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS) locates in Nanjing, the ancient capital of six dynasties. Headquartered at 10 Yuanhua Road of Qixia District; PMO has four research divisions, five laboratories and seven observation stations, with a total of 28 research groups, laboratories and base units.

PMO focuses on astrophysics, astrometry and astrodynamics, astronomical techniques and methods. The four research divisions include Antarctic Astronomy and Radio Astronomy Research divisions, Planetary Science and Deep Space Exploration Research divisions, Dark Matter and Space Astronomy Research divisions, Applied Astrodynamics and Space Objectives and Fragments Research divisions, The four key laboratories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences are Key Laboratory of Radio Astronomy, Key Laboratory of Space Target and Fragments Observation, Key Laboratory of Dark Matter and Space Astronomy, and Key Laboratory of Planetary Science. There are batch of advanced scientific research equipments in PMO headquarter and its observation stations. Besides, the Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) led by PMO, the first astronomical satellite of China launched in December 2015, has been a very successful mission till now. In high-energy particle space detection technology, millimeter and sub-millimeter wave detection technology, stars and galaxies, solar and heliosphere physics, planets and planetary systems, applied astrodynamics, PMO has abundant teaching strength and has achieved fruitful scientific research results.

PMO is one of the first key units in China to grant doctoral and master's degrees. It can enroll and cultivate doctoral and master degree candidates in astronomy at home and abroad. Currently, there are 271 graduate students in PMO of which 129 are master's and 142 are doctoral degree candidates.

At present, PMO has first-level discipline master’s and doctoral degree program and postdoctoral mobile station in astronomy, as well as master's and doctoral degree program in electronic information. PMO has a high-level team of tutors, and now has 90 graduate tutors, among which there are 64 doctoral supervisors, including 2 academicians of CAS and CAE. 12 recipients of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 9 recipients of National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars..

With sufficient scientific research funds and complete supporting scientific research instruments and equipments, PMO has established extensive cooperation and exchanges with domestic and foreign scientific research institutions, universities, academic organizations and enterprises. With a strong academic atmosphere and a relaxed academic environment, PMO is an ideal choice for engaging in astronomy research and further education.

Postgraduate education of PMO adheres to the educational concept of "research and education, attach equal importance to achievements and talents, closely integrate scientific research work, and cultivate senior scientific and technological innovation and entrepreneurial talents". Since 2005, one graduate student has been awarded the National Excellent Doctoral. Dissertation of China, 5 awarded the Special .Prize of .President Scholarship of CAS, 16 awarded the Excellent Doctoral .Dissertation of CAS, and 5 awarded the Excellent Doctoral Dissertation of Jiangsu Province. The overall training quality of postgraduates in PMO is among the highest in the field of astronomy education in China.

In terms of running conditions, the co-constructed astronomical college relies on a national institute with a long history and a well-known national university. It has formed a strong guarantee system in terms of office conditions, instruments and equipment, books and materials, logistics support, and also has strong strength in scientific research funds. The co-constructed academy has established postgraduate scholarships and research grants, in addition to various naming scholarships of CAS; Prize for can be awarded for publishing papers in academic journals; during the school period, students enjoy medical, health care, labor union membership, holidays and other welfare benefits.

In order to promote the integration of science and education, cultivate innovative talents with an international perspective, and play a leading role in the integration and training of talents in science and education in China. In accordance with the unified deployment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, PMO's education work has been adjusted from the University of CAS to University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). Student status of PMO has been adjusted and belongs to USTC. Graduates will be awarded the diploma and degree certificate of USTC.

In the conditions of running an institute: As a state-owned observatory with a long history, PMO is capable to provide students with office, instruments, library and adequate funding.

PMO is now open for international graduate (Master and PhD) students. The majors are as follows: astrophysics, celestial mechanics and astrometry, astronomical technique and method, electronics and communication engineering. Foreign students can apply for these relevant scholarships: the Chinese government scholarship, Nanjing government foreign students scholarship, and USTC Scholarship for International Students.

The Nanjing government foreign student scholarship provides each international student with 20000 yuan per year, and the applicants should submit their documents before the end of April. The result is released in September, and the students get their funding in December. The qualifications are as follows:
