The2010 Annual Conference ofChinese Astronomical Society was held in Nanning, capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on November 1-3, 2010.
The premier astronomical conference attracted over 450 astronomical researchers, including 6 members of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). ZHAO Gang, chairman of Chinese Astronomical Society, addressed a speech at the opening ceremony. He introduced major achievements in astronomical research, urging the participants to engage themselves in the 28th Conference of International Astronomical Union (IAU) that is to be held in Beijing in 2012.
Covering topics on star, planet, solar system, galaxy, radio astronomy, time frequency and cosmography, the conference invited 9 academic giants in these fields to deliver reports. Roger Blandford, for example, director of the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology, gave new horizons in astronomy and astrophysics, saying that the connection between the fields of astronomy and astrophysics are making new connections to physics, chemistry, biology, and computer science.
The conference also spared no effort in spreading astronomic knowledge as it invited 4 distinguished astronomists to make reports to the public for science popularization.
The conference altogether accepted 257 papers on a wide range of topics, on which the participants had heated discussion.
Prof. MA Yuqian from CAS Institute of High Energy Physics receivedthe 10thZHANG Yuzhe Prize, becoming one of the highlights at the conference. |
