| Abstract: NASA’s magnetospheric multiscale (MMS) mission aims to discover the electron-scale physics of magnetic reconnection, which is a dominant mechanism for eruptive processes in space plasma environment. The mission was launch on March 12th, 2015, and the high-resolution observations of MMS provide the unique opportunity to analyze the magnetic reconnection during the solar wind-magnetosphere coupling process. Types of agyrotropic electron distribution functions are resolved around the electron diffusion regions of dayside magnetopause and nightside magnetotail reconnection. The kinetic waves driven by crescent-shaped electron distribution functions can scatter and heat electrons around EDRs. MMS confirms that cold plasmas of ionospheric origin modify the Hall physics at the separatrix. Also, MMS observes the cold-ion diffusion region around X line, cold-ion jets in the exhaust, and kinetic waves driven by cold plasmas. MMS discovers the reconnection due to large-scale Kelvin-Helmholtz waves at the dayside magnetopause. |
