Abstract:Transiting exoplanet science and precision velocity follow-up has been providing basic exoplanetary parameters like orbital period, radius, mass, and therefore bulk density, for Jupiter sized exoplanets for several years. This has led to questions about, and insights into planet formation and evolution. I will describe the ongoing questions in this area of exoplanet research and discuss how modern instrumentation, both new and that soon coming, can push this work into the realm of low-mass gas giants and even rocky super-earths. This will enable a deeper understanding of the large variety of exoplanets we observe and, in the future, a detailed characterisation of the atmospheres of exoplanets.
