| Abstract Integral-Field-Unit (IFU) surveys are providing spatially resolved spectroscopy for samples of galaxies both in the local universe and at z~1. These data allow the radial variation of both the stellar and ionized gas components within galaxies to be studied in great depth, expected to improve dramatically our understanding of how different components of galaxies such as bulge and disc grow and how their star formation gets shut down, as well as the roles of external environment and dark matter halo play. In this talk I will present preliminary results that we have obtained from CALIFA and MaNGA, two ongoing large IFU surveys of nearby galaxies. It is found that galaxies at low-z grow and die in an "inside-out" manner, in the sense that the star formation ceases firstly in the central region and then extends to larger and larger radii. The presence of a prominent bulge in the galactic center seems crucial in this process, while on the other hand the growth of the bulge is enhanced by both bar-driven instabilities within the galaxy and tidal interactions with other galaxies. |
