    Abstract

In our Antennae study, we have probed the nuclei of NGC 4038 and NGC 4039 and the important “overlap” region located between them in this colliding/merging system with the Herschel PACS array spectrometer. Our goal is to assess and contrast the conditions present for star formation. In this talk we discuss the evolution of the system as understood through  n-body simulations, ground-basedmolecular spectroscopy, and by the FIR instruments aboard ISO, Spitzer, and finally Herschel. We parameterize the physical conditions (UV illumination, warm atomic gas density) in the three regions to draw conclusions of the star formation mechanisms at work.
