Abstract
The near-term future is particularly bright for X-ray astrophysics, with a number of both major and smaller facilities (Chandra, XMM-Newton, Suzaku, and Swift) operating well and a bevy of near-term missions being developed. These include NuStar, the first focussed imaging high-energy X-ray mission, Astro-H, a JAXA/NASA/ESA mission that will feature the first high-resolution X-ray imaging spectrometer, GEMS, an X-ray polarimeter with unprecedented sensitivity. Finally, plans are being developed in both the US and Europe for a major mission combining large mirrors with high angular resolution and new types of imaging and grating spectrometers. I will briefly discuss the design of each of these missions and review the science goals for X-ray astrophysics for the next decade and beyond.
