    Abstract
Galactic plane surveys allow us to address the global structure of our Milky Way. I will present recent results from the APEX ATLASGAL submm survey of the Galactic plane and discuss topics like the dense gas scale-height, prominent Galactic spiral arm structures and a potential low star formation efficiency toward the galactic center. Furthermore, I will present results from our Herschel program EPOS (The Early Phase Of Star Formation) where the physical conditions at the onset of high-mass star formation are characterized in detail. Environmental differences between different regions will also be discussed.
