Abstract
The almost-Newtonian physics of the early stage of the inspiral of a pair of black holes is very different from the physics of the general relativistic late stage. For rapidly spinning holes the gravitational wave momentum generated in the late stage can almost perfectly cancel the gravitational wave momentum generated in the early stage. The explanation turns out to be simple, and has very little connection to the details of black holes or gravitational waves.
