abstract It has been suggested that the strong decline of the cosmic star formation rate (SFR) since z=1 is mostly due to the evolution of star formation associated with galaxy interactions/mergers. However, this has been challenged in recent literature. A quantitative constraint on the evolution of interaction-induced star-formation in the universe is very important for future development of the galaxy evolution theory. In this talk, I will present a study on samples of nearby close major-merger pairs of galaxies selected from the 2MASS database in K-band. This is to provide a highly accurate and unbiased local (z=0) benchmark for studies on evolution of interacting galaxies.
