The first Sino-German workshop on star and planet formation, sponsored by The Sino-German Center for Research Promotion, was successfully held at Purple Mountain Observatory during March 30 to April 5, 2008. Thirteen German invited participants from the Max-Planck-Institute for Astronomy, Munich University Observatory, Bochum University, Goettingen University, Hamburg Observatory, Heidelberg University, Astrophysical Institute at Potsdam, Cologne University, Jena University, and Thuringian State Observatory attended the meeting. The German participants, among them nine are heads of research institutes or research groups and the other four are senior researchers, represent the most active researchers in the field of star and planet formation in Germany. Thirteen Chinese invited participants from Purple Mountain Observatory, National Observatories of China, Peking University, and Nanjing University attended the meeting. They represent the most active researchers in the field of star and planet formation in China. During the workshop participants from both sides critically reviewed the current research status, exchanged their most recent results, and discussed the unsolved problems and the potential approaches on the following topics: (1) Early phase of star formation: turbulent molecular clouds; (2) The origin of massive stars; (3) Open issues in low-mass star formation; and (4) Planet formation. In total, 25 oral talks on above four topics were presented in the workshop. Through this workshop parties on both sides achieved better knowledge of the expertise of each other and several collaborative projects were established.
